Letter to the Editor: Comments on Generic Drug Pricing in Andre Picard's Article

October 13, 2006

Dear Editor,

Canada's current system of pharmaceutical pricing is indeed convoluted and Andre Picard has done a noble job of sorting it out (Open drug-price regulation can save consumers billions - Oct. 12). Canadian bureaucrats and politicians have been far too complacent in accepting what patients and taxpayers pay for generic drugs as fair and reasonable. Retail issues must be addressed moving forward, replacing the current system of manufacturer rebates to pharmacists with reasonable and fair dispensing fees which reflect the contribution made by these professionals. Equally important, however, the base prices of off patent medicines must be subject to the same regulatory rigour as name brand drugs. Specifically, a reworking of the current Patented Medicine Prices Review Board model is warranted, mandating it to encompass generic drugs. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure the best deal possible for Canadian patients and taxpayers.
